Matouš Marek was born in 1999 in Turnov, Czech Republic. He received his first piano lessons at the age of eight at the Tábor Music School with Alena Vavřincová, and from 2011 with Eva Peřinová. In 2013 his family moved to Austria, where he subsequently started studying with Erwin Kropfitsch in Klagenfurt until 2017 and where he also graduated from the Musikgymnasium Viktring.
Since fall 2017, he has been studying at the Music and Arts University of the City of Vienna, first with Johannes Kropfitsch and since 2020 with Jura Margulis. Currently, Matouš is finishing his Master’s degree in Piano performance. Since 2013, he has also regularly participated in piano courses and masterclasses and has received numerous impulses by pianists such as Filippo Gamba, Ingolf Wunder, Gabriela Montero, Evgeni Koroliov or Sergio Tiempo.
Since 2014, Matouš Marek has successfully taken up the challenge of various international competitions such as the Giuliano Pecar International Piano Competition in Gorizia (2016), the Concorso Internazionale Cittá di Palmanova (2017), the Josef Dichler Competition (2020) or Danubia Talents Competition (2021).
In November 2021, Matouš debuted as a soloist in the Golden Hall of Vienna Musikverein with a performance of Liszt's 2nd Piano Concerto, accompanied by the MUK.Sinfonieorchester under the baton of Andreas Stoehr. He also cultivates a keen interest in the diverse developments of contemporary music, thus performing amongst others as a part of the Wien Modern festival. Besides his soloistic venues, Matouš is a passionate chamber musician, often performing with instrumental and vocal partners, such as the violinists Luka Ljubas and Paul Kropfitsch. Together with his partner Anastasia Krastanova, they form the recently founded piano DUO CONVERGENZA.
In addition to his performing activities, in the past years, Matouš has been increasingly active as a pedagogue. Amongst others, he has been a regular faculty member of the Carinthian summer music academy, as well as a part of the Johannes Brahms Privatkonservatorium teaching staff.
